MULTI-FUNCTIONAL BUILDING, CHUNG HWA HIGH SCHOOL
MUAR, JOHOR
PROJECT & REALIZATION: 2011-2016
TEAM: CHIA SHI CHEE, CHIA SHI CHEN, TEW KOK KEONG
This 90,000 square feet, four stories tall building is designed to accommodate a library, a gallery, a performance art center and a series of student activities spaces for Chung Hwa High School in Muar.
The building is organized around an open space with an existing monumental tree, which became the focus point of the design. Apart from spaces assigned to specific function listed in the brief, there are pilotis spaces, extra wide corridors and internal courtyard scattered around the building to encourage informal meetings and cross ventilation.
The use of over-burnt clay brick as the major materials on the building facade compliments the existing historic classrooms which uses brick balustrade and terracotta roof tiles. Designed between December 2011- December 2012, the building is erected between January 2013 – July 2016.
