The design intention is to try to provide a new living experience for young couple with kids, by transforming a conventional taman semi-d house to a living unit which contains several separate courtyards with different levels of privacy. The existing less than ideal condition of the structure leads us to keep one principle, to at least maintain or better reduce the overall structure weight. In addition, the renovation work has to be carried out within budget constraint. Program of the living quarter is converted “upside down”, bedrooms are moved to ground level, with closer connection to courtyards equipped with semi open WCs, while living and dining space occupy higher level which enables a panoramic view. Marine plywood is being used as window panel at most of the openings, whereas louvres panels are introduced where natural ventilation is required while maintaining privacy, like bedrooms.
